Honeywell innovations helped power the Boeing 787-9 “Dreamliner” on its first flight Sept. 17 in Seattle, Wash. Equipped with about a dozen Honeywell Aerospace products, the new airliner is scheduled to enter service in mid-2014.

The 787 family consists of super-efficient airplanes with passenger-pleasing features that bring the economics of large jet transports to the middle of the market. According to Boeing, the aircraft use 20 percent less fuel than any other airplanes of their size. At 20 feet longer than the 787-8, the 787-9 will extend the family in both capacity and range, carrying up to 290 passengers up to 8,500 nautical miles. Airline customers around the world have ordered 388 787-9s, accounting for 41 percent of all 787 orders.

“More than 1,000 Honeywell people worldwide worked on 787-related innovations,” according to Allison Peterson, Honeywell’s 787 Platform Director. “The 787 family is equipped with some of Honeywell’s most advanced avionics, flight control systems and lighting technology, all of which help Boeing achieve new levels of performance, efficiency and ease-of-use.

Honeywell provides the same complement of products on the 787-8 and 787-9, though some incremental improvements were made for the newer aircraft. For example, the flight control system incorporates the latest fly-by-wire technology, increasing comfort for passengers and ease-of-use for flight crews.  Sites that supported flight control improvements are Phoenix; Redmond, Wash.; Urbana, Ill; Coon Rapids, Minn.; Olathe, Kansas; Bangalore and Hyderabad, India; Brno, Republic; and several sites in China.

Honeywell provides a dozen products, functions and systems for the 787 including Flight Control Electronics (FCE) and software; Flight Management System (FMS); Navigation Radios and Antennas, Integrated Navigation Receiver (INR); Crew Information System (CIS); Maintenance System; Communications Management Function (CMF); Earth Reference System (ERS); Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS); Air Data Reference System (ADRS); Navigation Radios and Antennas; Engine anti-ice valves; External, Cargo and Service Lighting; and oil and generator coolers.
